Students opting for clinical training fulfil the same research requirements and have the same opportunities for specialization in one of the department's four areas of research specialization as other students. New students are accepted into our program by a faculty member willing to provide supervision and financial assistance. Each student is thus associated with a research team comprised of faculty and graduate students. A noteworthy feature of our program is that clinical students may study applied problems (e.g., child or adult psychopathology; high risk populations; adjustment in aging; health psychology) in their research teams, or they may also study more theoretical problems with humans (e.g., cognitive, social, and developmental processes; information processing and social cognition) or animals (e.g., appetitive motivation; drugs, hormones, and behaviour; reproductive behaviour).

Because entering students often have had previous research experience and participate in advanced research in our program, by the time they complete the Ph.D. degree they have achieved a high level of research specialization, and expertise. As a result of the high quality of our students' research, many have opportunities to present their research findings at national and/or international scientific conferences. There are several sources of funding for student travel to scientific conferences within the Department. Also, students are expected to publish articles based on their research in scientific journals.
