Anxiety Disorders Laboratory

Michel Dugas, PhD

Michel J. Dugas

I am currently Professor, Director of the Anxiety Disorders Laboratory, and Director of the Centre for Clinical Research in Health in the Department of Psychology at Concordia University.

Over the past 18 years, my students, colleagues and I have conducted clinical research on the psychological processes involved in the aetiology of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). This line of research has led to the development of a cognitive-behavioural treatment protocol for GAD, which is based on a cognitive model developed in our earlier studies. The treatment, which targets the four model components (intolerance of uncertainty, positive beliefs about worry, negative problem orientation, and cognitive avoidance), has now been validated in four randomized controlled trials, all of which have been funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

Overall, the results from these studies show that the treatment is efficacious for the majority of individuals with GAD, and that gains are maintained and even augmented over periods of at least two years following treatment. Although these findings are encouraging, our research group is currently investigating ways of improving treatment efficacy by refining our understanding of the mechanisms involved in the development, maintenance, and treatment of excessive worry and GAD.

For example, we are now investigating:

  1. The relation between intolerance of uncertainty, cognitive avoidance and memory biases for threatening and uncertainty-related stimuli (Kylie Francis)
  2. The cognitive, behavioural, and emotional responses that result from different negative beliefs about uncertainty (Kathryn Sexton)
  3. The role of elevated levels of anger in the presentation and treatment of GAD (Kristin Anderson & Sonya Deschenes)
  4. The impact of an interpretation modification programme on appraisal style and GAD symptoms (Eleanor Donegan & Avital Ogniewicz)
  5. The influence of depressive symptoms on the efficacy of cognitive-behavioural treatment for GAD (Elizabeth Hebert)

It is our hope that studies such as these will help to refine our understanding of the cognitive, behavioural, and emotional processes involved in the aetiology of excessive worry and GAD, and thus lead to more effective treatments for individuals with this highly prevalent and debilitating anxiety disorder.
